Travel Management Plan

The Travel Management Plan will determine the disposition of all roads and trails on the White River National Forest – which means that, among other things, it will dictate if and where new roads will be developed, which old roads will be retired, and where ATVs, dirt bikes and other vehicles will and will not be allowed.

WW has been weighing in on this plan for three years, and this past winter analyzed it in route-by-route detail (all 3,000 miles of roads and 1,600 miles of trails on the Forest) and submitted comprehensive comments on the almost-final draft. On the whole, we found this latest iteration to be much improved, having incorporated many of our earlier recommendations, but we used the opportunity to push for strengthened protections and also to support the plan's good aspects against the expected backlash from motorized groups.

We'll continue to watchdog this process to ensure that no backsliding occurs in the final plan, which is expected to be released later this year.
