Introduction to the Wilderness Workshop

The Wilderness Workshop is the conservation watchdog of the White River National Forest and other nearby federal public lands. WW works to keep our backcountry more or less "as is" and, where possible, to improve its ecological health by reconnecting fragmented wildlife habitat.

The Wilderness Workshop is the only nonprofit organization that's devoted to protecting the ecological health of these particular public lands on a full-time basis, and is the only place-based organization in the region with the expertise and standing to participate effectively and consistently in the arcane bureaucratic processes that decide the fate of these lands.

We protect and preserve existing wilderness areas, advocate for expanding wilderness, defend roadless areas from development that would destroy their wild character, and safeguard the ecological integrity of all federal public lands in our service area.

Although focused on the White River National Forest region, our work is part of a visionary movement to reconnect wildlife habitats and “rewild” landscapes on a continental scale. Thus we frequently partner with other local, state, regional and national groups on projects.
